City Corner: A Vintage Industrial Residence

Design by Chen-Yu Chiu

Inspired by the Vintage Industrial Style, the City Corner residence combines rustic elements with clever lighting techniques to maximize natural light. The design team implemented a coherent approach, reorienting the space, enlarging window openings, and incorporating hollow cabinets for storage. The result is a calm and simple color palette that creates a quiet and leisurely atmosphere.

The City Corner residence stands out with its unique take on the Vintage Industrial Style. The walls of the public area are plastered with gray paint, preserving the rustic and old texture of the original space. By using natural color light, transparent materials, and rotating the direction of the kitchen, the design team significantly improved the lighting in the long and narrow space. The harmonious feeling of rustic nature is achieved through the use of Morandi tones, solid wood, gray materials, and ironwork.

The realization of the City Corner design involved the use of various materials, including woodgrain tiles, composite super wear-resistant floor, concrete, OSB solid wood fiberboard, and black matte roasted iron. These materials were carefully selected to enhance the functionality of the space while maintaining the Vintage Industrial aesthetic.

With an area of approximately 100 square meters, the City Corner residence is characterized by its long and narrow layout. The design team strategically arranged functional zones to optimize circulation and meet the user's needs. By removing walls and creating a more open living space, the design team successfully transformed the original layout into a more complete and spacious environment.

Chen-Yu Chiu led the design team responsible for the City Corner residence. Their focus was not only on improving the space layout and natural lighting but also on providing ample storage solutions without compromising the overall aesthetic. Hidden doors, hollow cabinets, movable cabinets, and hanging iron shelves were incorporated to enhance convenience and flexibility.

The City Corner residence was completed in July 2020 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Extensive research was conducted to address the challenges posed by the original space, such as limited natural lighting and poor circulation. The design team's innovative solutions, including reorienting the kitchen and master bedroom, enlarging windows, and using hollow storage cabinets, resulted in a seamless and well-lit space.

The City Corner residence received the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The City Corner residence stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
